Mary Margaret “Peggy” Houck, 97, passed away peacefully Oct, 25, 2019 at Cottesmore of Life Care in Gig Harbor, Wa.
Mary was born in Seattle, Wa. Sept 20,1922. Mary and her sisters Betty Moore and Florence Chavanu were the children of Jacob and Ava Book. The young family lived in the company town of Creosote on Bainbridge Island where her father was superintendent of West Coast Wood Preservation Co. (aka Wykoff).
The family latter moved to Head of the Bay, where she spent most of her remaining years.
She met her future husband James Houck while he was stationed as a Marine guard at Fort Ward on Bainbridge.
She moved to Oceanside, Ca. and worked at a hardware store while Jim was serving in the South Pacific during WW2.
They were wed upon his return in Oceanside, Ca. on Dec. 7, 1944.
They returned to Bainbridge Island after the war to raise four children. Stephen, Barbara, Margaret & Kevin.
Peggy worked at various jobs while also raising her family. She worked at Bainbridge Gardens, the strawberry processing plant, sold Avon products & owned Hugo’s shoe store in Poulsbo in the 1960’s.
Cooking, baking & canning were her specialties.
She was a lifelong member of Eagle Harbor Congregational church.
She is survived by daughter Margaret Wilder & son Kevin.
She was preceded in death by parents Jacob & Ava Book, sisters Betty Moore & Florence Chavanu, husband James, son Stephen, daughter Barbara Blymyer.
A memorial service will be held at Eagle Harbor Congregational church on Bainbridge Island, Wa. Nov. 30, 2019 at 1pm.
