Bill, Born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 19, 1927 to Herbert V. and Francis Dunham Martyn, Died October 9, 2019.
While growing up he lived in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Wheaton and Willmett, Illinois, Babson Park Florida, and Aurora, Ohio. He attended Aurora Elementary School and one year at Aurora High School. He spent his sophomore through senior years at Western Reserve Academy, a boarding school in Hudson, Ohio.
After graduation in June 1945 he immediately began at Yale University and graduated with a Bachelor in Botany and a Masters of Forestry in February 1950. For a short time after graduation, he worked in the strip coal mines in southern Ohio and spent a summer working as a temporary Ranger at the Elwah Ranger Station in the Olympic National Park.
He started working for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in Longview, Washington in October 1950 and spent his working career with Weyerhaeuser, mostly in sales and management, until his retirement in 1990.
Bill married his college roommate’s sister, Eroline Elaine Baker in August 1952. They moved from Longview to Chicago in January 1953. His oldest son, Scott and daughter, Elaine were both born at Passavant Hospital in Chicago. In July of 1960 the family moved to Eugene, Oregon where his son Peter was born. In 1966 the family moved to Tacoma, Washington where son John was born. He was preceded in death by Eroline.
While he and Eroline were raising their family, Bill was deeply involved in their activities. While in Eugene the family joined the Obsidians, a hiking and mountain climbing club. He and Scott climbed most of the major peaks in Oregon as well at Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Shucksan in Washington. He was active in Boy Scouts for over 20 years as all three sons became Eagle Scouts. He planned and took many 50 mile hikes with Troop 47 based in Fircrest. He loved fly fishing and wished he had done more. He found time in the 1970’s to serve a 4 year term on the Fircrest City Council.
After retirement he served on the boards on many non profit community organizations including Tacoma Kiwanis Club (President and Treasurer), Family Counseling Services, President of Tacoma Little Theatre, Gateways for Youth and Family (Children’s Industrial Home), Fish, and the Broadway Center for Performing Arts where he was Treasurer for 3 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eroline Baker Martyn and is survived by their 4 children, Scott Martyn (Barbara) of Toronto, Elaine Hickcox (Mike) of Seattle, Peter Martyn of Fircrest and John Martyn (Jennifer) of Redmond, Washington and grandchildren, Madison Hickcox, Evan and Carys Martyn and a sister, Sally Martyn Lacy, of Vermont.
He is also preceded in death by his second wife Mary Alice Martyn and survived by her two children and their families.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church 310 North K Street, Tacoma, WA 98403.
