Gerald Culpepper

April 9, 1951 - January 9, 2022

Jerry wore  many hats, husband, friend, uncle, brother.  Truck dispatcher and bookseller.

A game of chess with Morely Fox drew him into the world of antiquarian books and that was a world he loved and to which he remained true for the rest of his life.

His wife of 26 years, Michele Martin and he met when they both worked at the News Tribune.  Being book lovers they opened Culpepper Books in 1999.  First on 6th Avenue and finally into the Proctor District where they remained until 2019.

A friend described him thus:

The keeper of Knowledge,

Vibrant, colorful, despite his long battles with poor health.

The Center of a core group of individuals (lovingly known as the Bookstore Irregulars) who loved books and “knowing” almost as much   as he did.

Jerry was a lover of books and words, a softy for cats.

Wry wit, always ready with a truly bad joke and a cup of bookstore coffee.

A man with a big heart and a curmudgeon exterior.

He is sorely missed.

01/09/2022.  RIP my darling.
