Robert W. Whipple was born August 9, 1922 in Spokane, Washington to Margaret Irene (Fenlon) and Orley Keeling Whipple. Bob died in Tacoma, Washington on October 31, 2012. He spent the first five years of his life in Washington and then seven years living at the Kennecott Copper Mine in Alaska. He returned to Tacoma and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific theatre during WWII from 1941-46 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant receiving the American Theatre Service, Asia-Pacific, Good Conduct, and Victory medals as a radio operator. He was a welder, VA clerk, care taker/ gardener and friend to many. Bob enjoyed golf, gardening, fishing, home makeovers and travel. He was a lifetime member of Narrows Bridge VFW Post 10018 and proud to serve our country!
Bob married W. Eva "Patty" Whipple November 14, 1944 and they spent 55 years together in California, Alaska, Oregon, Oklahoma and Washington State. In 1976 they retired to Seattle to care for the estate of Mr. and Mrs. John McCone, the former CIA Director. Between 1985 and 1999, they lived in Ryderwood, Castle Rock and Cathlamet, Washington buying and repairing homes till Patty's death. Mr. Whipple returned to Tacoma in 2000 to complete his life, enjoy Point Defiance Park, the W.W. Seymour Conservatory, care for his sister Marvel, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patty; his parents Orley (OK) and Margaret Whipple; sister Marvel Whipple Laughlin; and step sister Margaret Stocks. He is survived by niece Colleen Laughlin Pardo and her five children, Ian, Rylan, Afton, Reu and Brevin Pardo of Mesa, Arizona; his nephew Kevin Laughlin of Garden City, Idaho; friends Georgia McCollum, Las Vegas, Nevada, Patti Shanda of Tacoma, Tom and Sue Gallwas of Puyallup, the Tacoma Dominican Community, resident friends at Life Manor Independent Living in Tacoma.
The family would like to thank the following: Group Health South Dr. Robert D. Flack, Nurse, Mary Pat Burgin-Sperry and Social Worker, Mary Edgecomb for their "excellent care and support" of Mr. Whipple in his last years; Nanette Baus, Community Manager, and support staff at Life Manor Independent Living in Tacoma; Ministers and musicians at Life Christian Center in Tacoma.
Burial was at the Tahoma National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Life Christian Center, the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Tacoma, or Point Defiance Park in Bob's memory.
